Recycled Content Verification Challenge FAQ

How is construction waste being considered by this program?

The Office of Energy and Climate Change has narrowed down and identified potential materials for this challenge, and some of those materials may come from construction waste. One of the priorities of this program is to ensure that intaking recycled content doesn't create problematic waste as well.

This isn't a waste avoidance program, instead it is focussed on metabolising and using existing recycled resources. There are other initiatives in the NSW Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy that focus on reducing construction waste.

How will the whole industry system be incorporated to make solutions work? Will you make participation mandatory overseas manufacturers?

The goal is not to make participation mandatory, but highly incentivised. For example, through existing chain of custody frameworks like the Food Standards Code (FSC). These are not mandatory, but demand for products under the framework incentivises suppliers.
