NSW Research Sector Receives $8 Million Infrastructure Boost

The state’s research sector will benefit from an $8 million funding boost to cutting-edge research and development facilities through the NSW Government’s Research Attraction and Acceleration Program (RAAP).

NSW Chief Scientist & Engineer Professor Hugh Durrant-Whyte said the funding encourages and supports high-quality, high-impact research and helps to drive innovation in the state's research and development sector.

The funding is provided to NSW-based institutions that have been funded under the Commonwealth’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS).

“This funding will help to ensure our world-class facilities are at the top of their game and will also attract leading international research projects to NSW,” Professor Hugh Durrant-Whyte said. “The NSW Government has a strong track record of supporting of NCRIS facilities in the state, providing almost $50 million in co-investment funding from 2006/07 to date.

“Co-investment in this infrastructure has allowed NSW to build and support facilities conducting research in important areas including nano-fabrication, atom-scale imaging, new bio-platforms, astronomical observation and many more. This work will help to develop exciting new technologies and accelerate the growth of high-tech industry, delivering prosperity to NSW.

“This year, more than $2 million has been awarded to the NSW nodes of the Australian National Fabrication Facility to support work such as 3D Bioprinting and Silicon Quantum Computing,” Professor Durrant-Whyte said.

“Bioplatforms Australia will receive $1.5 million to grow bioinformatics expertise in NSW and support a major Proteome Analysis facility.”
