Engineers Australia
The Office of the Chief Scientist & Engineer (OCSE) is a principal sponsor of Engineers Australia (EA), supporting EA's initiatives to raise STEM awareness and engagement in high school students.
Tackling many of NSW's big challenges requires a strong and diverse sector of STEM professionals. Supporting STEM outreach and encouraging young people to consider careers in STEM is critical to maintaining and building this sector.
With the help of funding from OCSE's Research Attraction and Acceleration Program, EA runs the following STEM outreach programs, reaching over 2000 students across the state:
- 'Engineering Your Future' panel discussions - an online series to help high school students learn more about opportunities in engineering. Sessions include live Q&A with professional engineers, and engineering students and academics across all sectors, as well as workshops introducing students to real-life projects and problems.
- Discover Engineering days - in-classroom zoom sessions for Year 7 to Year 10 students. These whole-day sessions include immersive activities related to engineering and design thinking, facilitated by university students.
- Experience IT! - online and hybrid full-day events providing experiential engineering activities for female students from Year 7 to Year 10. Organised by EA Sydney’s Women in Engineering Society, these events are delivered in collaboration with several universities and engineering businesses.
- Engineering Schools - these are multi-day programs for Year 11 and Year 12 students. They are designed to show students what engineering is and how it works in everyday life, including lectures, demonstrations and visits to universities and industry sites.
