Preliminary applications for the Biosciences Fund Round 1 are now open.
The Biosciences Fund (BioSF) is a $40 million (providing up to $10 million each year) competitive technology development and commercialisation grant program, which sits under the Commercialisation Pathways Program. It is modelled on and will complement the Physical Sciences Fund (PSF).
The Commercialisation Pathways Program is funded under the Future Economy Fund announced in the 2022/23 NSW State Budget to support innovation and business development in emerging, high-value sectors where NSW has a competitive advantage.
BioSF Round 1 provides grants valued between $200,000 and $2 million to companies with innovative technologies, devices and systems in areas including biotechnology and life sciences, biomanufacturing, synthetic biology and agri-food.
Projects must align with:
- one of three Priority Industries listed in the NSW Industry Development Framework:
- Agriculture and agrifood
- Medical and life sciences
- Clean energy and waste, and
- one of the technology applications identified in the NSW 20-Year R&D Roadmap:
- Genetic Engineering
- Synthetic Biology
- Personalised Medicine
- Cell-based meats
- AgTech
- Sustainable Fuels
- Power to X
- Renewable generation
- Environmental monitoring and management
- Robotics
- AI
- Pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals
- Circular Economy
- Novel Fertilisers
- Vaccines
The BioSF is targeted towards biosciences and does not cover all themes, industries and technologies listed in the 20-Year R&D Roadmap and NSW Industry Development Framework. Other technologies in the physical sciences domain, including quantum, space, energy, communications and robotics will be supported through the PSF. Medical devices are funded under the Medical Devices Fund (MDF).
The BioSF targets innovative devices/systems within Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 3 – 7 to help companies move their product along the TRL scale, commercialise their idea and enable them to attract large-scale private investment.
